Madrid is the capitol and the largest city in Spain. The area that is now Madrid has been occupied since pre-historic times, but experienced its height of glory during the Spanish Golden Age. At that time the city flourished with great artists, genius composers, talented authors, and imaginative architects. All have left their mark on this thriving metropolis, which is now an excellent destination for students attending Spanish school in Madrid. Although Madrid is a very modern city, it retains its old world feel in its many historic neighborhoods and streets. Students lucky enough to take Spanish courses in Madrid will be surrounded by a wealth of history. They can visit the Royal Palace of Madrid, constructed between 1738 and 1755. This architectural wonder remains the location for official royal ceremonies, but guests are allowed to visit 50 of its 2800 rooms with a tour guide, or via a self-guided tour. The Prado Museum is a popular site for art enthusiasts, but is only one of the major museums available. Students will want to visit each museum multiple times to fully grasp all they have to offer. Madrid features a continental Mediterranean climate, having hot summers, and a high enough altitude to get some snow in winter. When students are ready to enjoy all that modern Madrid has to give, they can spend time at the amusement park in Casa de Campo, or stroll through the zoo. Take time to visit Retiro Park and catch a free concert, or take a boat ride. The nightlife is unparalleled, with numerous clubs where patrons dance until dawn. Rich in food, culture and friendly people, Madrid is a great destination.
